October 1 is the beginning of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This is the month we come together to fight breast cancer by spreading the word on breast health and self-exams, the importance of mammograms and raising hundreds of millions of dollars to fund research to find a cure.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month began in 1985, a joint venture of the American Cancer Society and a pharmaceutical company, to educate women about the need for mammograms. This was a couple of years after the Susan G. Komen Foundation held their first Race for the Cure in Dallas. Since then these events have grown into worldwide phenomenon that are supported by individuals and corporations, from cosmetic firms to fried chicken restaurants to the World Wrestling Federation, all working to find a cure.
The results are increased survival rates, more effective and less invasive treatments and more accurate ways of looking at the disease. Just last month researchers revealed a new understanding of the genetic components of breast cancer which is expected to lead to treatments that target the disease's genetic weaknesses. But none of us will be satisfied until we've found a way to prevent all breast cancers.
Even with these advancements, about one in eight of us will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in our lives. But there are steps we can take to reduce out personal risk of breast cancer. Here are the recommendations of the American Cancer Society.
- Maintain a healthy body weight
- Engage in moderate to vigorous regular physical activity (at least 45-60 minutes on 5 or more days of the week)
- Eat a primarily plant-based diet limiting the amount of processed and red meats
- Reduce the amount of alcohol you drink, if you drink at all, no more than 1 drink per day for women
- Screen for early detection of the disease with monthly self-exams and annual mammograms for all women over 40
Working together we will find the cure. Like the tortoise, slow and steady will win the race.
