... Dangerous Bras? Yes, you read that right, dangerous bras. From time to time there are articles in the press extolling the dangers of various bras or wearing bras altogether.
This week we are examining and debunking some of the claims you may have seen about how bras can be dangerous to your health.
The most alarming claim - that wearing a bra causes breast cancer -- has been circulating for more than 15 years and there is still no scientific data to support it. A book titled Dressed to Kill claims there is a correlation between how many hours a day a woman wears a bra and the incidence of breast cancer implying that wearing a bra is what causes breast cancer. Both the qualifications of the authors and their methods have been challenged. This claim has been specifically refuted by the American Cancer Society, the National Cancer Institute and leading breast cancer expert, Dr. Susan Love. Still it can be upsetting to come across statements like this in the press.
Other claims range from the mundane - skin reactions to fabric dyes, to the bizarre - underwires trigger acupuncture sites with potentially dangerous results (unproven), to the curious -- a UK police department instructing its female officers not to wear underwire bras while on duty because the metal underwire could cause extra damage if the officer is shot. You would think the bullet would be more of a cause of concern than the underwire, wouldn't you?
So what's a girl to do? First, don't over react. Get the facts. When something alarming hits the news, experts like the American Cancer Society will set the record straight in a day or two. Listen carefully to what is said and what is not said. Statistics can be misleading, especially if they are presented out of context. If a report is particularly upsetting or in some way appears to apply to you, the best thing to do is to contact your personal physician. He or she is aware of your medical history and is best able to answer specific questions about your health.
The Danger is in a Bad Fit!
And while there is no scientific evidence that bras are dangerous, there is plenty of evidence that wearing a poorly fitting bra causes discomfort which can become more serious if the ill-fitting bra is worn over long periods of time.
