To close out Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we here at Big Girls Bras are revisiting one of the most pervasive myths about women’s health: does wearing a bra cause breast cancer? It seems we have to weigh in on controversial breast health topics at least once a year, because these myths are so omni-present that they’re constantly reaching – and confusing – a new audience. Here it all is once again, neatly presented so you can answer once and for all: do bras cause breast cancer? Does wearing a bra cause any health issues?
Do Bras Cause Breast Cancer?
The question of whether bras cause breast cancer is one that comes up over and over again, and it’s due in large part to one poorly-researched book written by anthropologists – not even medical professionals – in the mid-1990s. The book makes a lot of alarming claims, but respectable medical doctors and cancer-research institutions do not support this theory. In spite of what’s claimed, there is not a single study that shows a conclusive link between wearing a bra and breast cancer. If you want more details, check out some of the articles we’ve published about this topic in the past featuring an in-depth breakdown of this common myth:
Still not convinced? Worried that we might have overlooked something? Scared because your boyfriend’s sister’s aunt absolutely KNOWS someone who got breast cancer from wearing a bra? Don’t take our word for it – here’s what an actual doctor had to say about the topic earlier this year: “Your bra is not killing you.”
Should I be Worried about “Insert Common Breast Health Myth Here?”
Ok, so the myth of bras causing breast cancer is officially off the table. But what about other common questions about bra health? This is also a topic we’ve visited in depth (check out “Revisiting ‘Dangerous Bras: Myths and Truths about Your Breast Health’”) – but here’s a summary of a few of the most-asked questions if you don’t feel like reading a whole article:
Q: Does wearing a bra cause your breasts to sag?
Q: Do underwire bras cause medical issues?
A: No. (Unless you’ve recently had surgery and your doctor has recommended against wearing underwire bras during your surgical recovery – but that’s an entirely different scenario.)
Q: Can poor bra fit cause medical issues?
A: Yes! Surprise, this one may seem like a myth but is actually true. Poor bra fit can cause everything from headaches to back problems, neck problems and even breathing problems – especially if you’re a full-busted woman. Take a moment to review our fit guidelines to make sure you’re not making your life more difficult through improper bra fit.
Bottom line: women’s health issues are an area in which we should all take the time to educate ourselves. Don’t fall victim to myths about whether something is dangerous to your health – but do know the medical risks for legitimate concerns. And remember, if you haven’t already gotten screened during breast cancer month, now is the time to do it!
